Thanks to good timing and some great singles, the Breeders' second album, Last Splash, turned them into the alternative rock stars that Kim Deal's former band, the Pixies, always seemed on the verge of becoming. Joined by Deal's twin sister Kelley -- with whom Kim started the band while they were still in their teens -- the group expanded on the driving, polished sound of the Safari EP, surrounding its (plentiful) moments of brilliance with nearly as many unfinished ideas. When Last Splash is good, it's great: "Cannonball"'s instantly catchy collage of bouncy bass, rhythmic stops and starts, and singsong vocals became one of the definitive alt-pop singles of the '90s. Likewise, the sweetly sexy "Divine Hammer" and swaggering "Saints" are among the Breeders' finest moments, and deserved all of the airplay they received. Similarly, the charming twang of "Drivin' on 9," "I Just Wanna Get Along"'s spiky punk-pop, and the bittersweet "Invisible Man" added depth that recalled the eclectic turns the band took on Pod while maintaining the slick allure of Last Splash's hits. However, underdeveloped snippets such as "Roi" and "No Aloha" drag down the album's momentum, and when the band tries to stretch its range on the rambling, cryptic "Mad Lucas" and "Hag," it tends to fall flat. The addition of playful but slight instrumentals such as "S.O.S" and "Flipside" and a version of "Do You Love Me Now?" that doesn't quite match the original's appeal reflect Last Splash's overall unevenness. Still, its best moments -- and the Deal sisters' megawatt charm -- end up outweighing its inconsistencies to make it one of the alternative rock era's defining albums.

If you'd been a baker for more than 50 years, you could be forgiven for being sick of the sight of chocolate éclairs. Similarly, a half-century on from the first Stooges album, Iggy Pop has made it clear he's not as in love with rock & roll as he once was. Albums such as 2009's Preliminaires and 2012's Après have found him exploring less aggressive and more thoughtful material, and Iggy continues this trend with 2019's Free. In his liner notes, Iggy writes, "I began to recoil from guitar riffs in favor of guitarscapes, from twangs in favor of horns, from back beat in favor of space," and that's a concise and accurate summary of the sound he approaches on this album. While there are electric guitars on most of these numbers, there's little in the way of fuzz or bark, and a ghostly trumpet and waves of atmospheric keyboards play a much bigger role in the arrangements. Iggy had a hand in writing three of the tracks on Free, but most of the songs were penned by his primarily collaborators on this album, trumpeter Leron Thomas and Noveller, who is credited with "guitarscapes." There are a few playful moments, most notably on the sly and slinky "James Bond," but for the most part, Free finds Iggy contemplating a culture caught in a tailspin, and while no one would have expected the guy singing on Fun House to set Dylan Thomas' "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night" to music back in the day, here his deep, craggy voice and tone of weary rage fits the classic verse like a glove. Not everything on this album works, and the sex and porn rant "Dirty Sanchez" may be the stupidest thing Iggy has sung since 2001's misbegotten Beat Em Up, though at least take comfort in the fact he didn't write it. As a detour from rock & roll, Free is a fine and compelling study of the mind and mood of Iggy Pop at the age of 72, and if it's clearly the work of an older artist, that works to its favor, a pointed contrast to the abandon of his youth but with no less gravitas.

A kaleidoscopic eruption of sounds and textures, a wonderful insanity that's 100% enjoyable and even danceable!

The suite was commissioned to accompany the exhibition of the engravings at Lithuanian Art Museum. It is an electroacoustic work inspired by Goya's engravings. It's composed in the form of a classical suite, and uses symphonic timbres. The titles of the movements take their name from some of the 80 engravings. The artwork is reminiscent of an engraving and has been designed by Locktite, nominated to a LatinGrammy for her previous work with Erizonte "Los Caprichos de Goya" is also a music, video and dance live show, created by the ERIZONTE company, which has been performed in Berlin and Madrid. 50 copies of the pressing include a facsimile of the engraving "El sueño de la razón produce monstruos", made from the original at Spain's National Engraving Academy.

NIGHT MIASMA with members from East German Postpunk-band L‘APPEL DU VIDE plays a seldom heard mix of Dark Punk with a very melodic edge reminescent of early LA-Punkbands like Adolescents, 45 Grave or T.S.O.L.. Deep and harmonic vocals borrowed from old british or belgian Postpunkbands and a creepy Coldwave-organ build up a melancholic atmosphere. But the four songs never drift into depressing territory. The production also seems more raw, possibly due to the fact that the band has moved from Conrad Uno to veteran Seattle producer Jack Endino, who also engineered the first releases from bassist Steve Turner and vocalist Mark Arm's other band, Mudhoney. Also contributing to the rawness of the record is the absence of Arm's trademark piano and organ. This enhances the energy, causing you to notice a more frantic, electrified side of the band. As on the debut album, Clean as a Broke-Dick Dog, several genres of music are given equal time, including the country of "Thirteen Nights" and "The Empty Place," the rockabilly of "The Weasel's in the Barn," the Eastern modal quality of "Around Again," and the noise rock of the closing number, "In the Days of the Five." The Monkeywrench have grown in their ability to craft a song, and the result is a masterpiece.

Blixa Bargeld, NU Unruh, Alexander Hacke, Jochen Arbeit and Rudolph Moser put into the mixer Sonsoles industrial sound, their beats from the 90s or their more complex work of the last stage in which around the versatility of the year of the Rat, in the Chinese horoscope, they create a cast of genuine songs that defines every category to create a genre in itself.

El Desvän del Macho is a group that has always gone "to his ball". They marked territory, more than 20 years ago, with "Hermana Violencia", their debut album, showing a unique personality and musical vision in an overwhelming and almost defiant way. New full-length album by El Desvän del Macho after twelve years since the release of his previous album "Lumbar" (Alehop !, 1996). The recording took place in Ángel Kataraín's studios, although Iñaki Bengoa, a friend of the band and producer of previous works, participates in the technical assistance. Recorded with Arkaitz Garay on drums, Vicente Mijangos, who was commissioned before this instrument, appears simply as a collaborator, like Ibon Urizar on trumpet and Rafa Ferreira in the sequences and samplers. As in all his previous LPs, one of the songs has lyrics adapted from José Anitua. In this case it is "El clavo", although all the others correspond to compositions by José. The same happens with music, since the singer and guitarist is responsible for all the songs except in the case of "Installation and thickness of sin" in which he was assisted by Aitor Berastegui. The cover is of similar quality to that of the previous works. A group that takes care of this type of detail in a meticulous way, in this case, with the help of Murky, one of those responsible together with his partner Eva from the label, they present a subway scene with lights and monochrome monitors. As in the case of "Lumbar", the distinctive that Murky designs for the label is a coffin, clearly influenced by the sinister tone registers worked by the group.

99.00 DUB MANIFEST (Esan Ozenki records 2000), is the title of Fermin Muguruza's second solo album. Now, 20 years after its publication, we present a careful double vinyl edition, a format in which it was not originally published. This album was recorded with the band that helped him present his acclaimed Brigadistak Sound System live and went on a 2-year tour with it. Martin Rev's fifth solo album was created at the cusp of the millennium. Angry, electric music, condensed in the memories of the doo wop he heard on the transistor in his childhood. Neon Vampire is a band from Cádiz that was born as the natural evolution of their previous project, Champagne, with which they released three studio albums and performed concerts throughout the Spanish geography, performing at renowned festivals such as Ebrovisión or Not Without Music. In 1975 Alex Chilton went into the Ardent Recording Studios with producer Jon Tiven and out of some tumultuous recording sessions came a number of loose and unpolished gems, which would ultimately become the "Bach's Bottom" album. Munster is proud to present this 7" featuring previously unreleased alternate versions of three of those tracks, another instance of Alex Chilton magic.

Reissue of this 1999 collaboration between Etant Donnés (Eric & Marc Hurtado) and Michael Gira(Swans), featuring Mark Cunningham (Mars) and Saba Komossa (Delkom).The album is based upon the text "Offenbarung Und Untergang" ("Revelation and Demise"), written by theAustrian expressionist poet Georg Trakl in 1914. The Hurtado brothers create a fittingly eerie, somber and desolate soundscape as backdrop to Gira's reading and singing (in German) of Trakl's equally somber poetic text.

The Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival (Sitges Festival for short) publishes this year as an official book a work by our journalist (and nevertheless friend) Pacus González Centeno, entitled "Three pieces for the murderer: Jazz, rock and electronics in crime and horror cinema ", in which he analyzes chronologically, decade by decade, the relationship between popular music styles and the main genre film styles of the 2nd half of the 20th century. Pacus had the brilliant (and crazy) idea of complementing the edition of the book with a disc of versions of some of the songs shelled in the book performed by bands from our current underground scene, and he raised the proposal to Family Spree Recordings, with the aim to collaborate in the selection of the songs, enrollment of the bands and coordination of all the actions necessary for the project to see the light. The idea was hatched in the form of a double LP and with the title "Kong'n'roll - 26 rock'n'roll bands tribute to the Sitges Horror Film Festival" and has the participation of 26 bands performing masterfully songs included in some of the films that formed the soundtrack of any of the selected films. Eureka Hot 4 is an incandescent Soul-Punk rocket from the bowels of Bermeo, Bizkaia. They close the energetic “Camándula” and “Vaciado”, a melodic and acoustic halftime that ends up being poisoned by electricity. Reissue of this absolute classic of the late 70s UK underground. 'O' Level was created in 1976 by London guitarist Ed Ball along with two friends from school, the Benett brothers (John on drums and Gerard on bass), who would leave the band in March 1978. That same line-up plus Dan Treacy (another school friend of Ball's) recorded the first Television Personalities single in 1977, titled '14th Floor'. 'O' Level self-released that same year their first single, which included three tracks strongly influenced by punk's energy (Buzzcocks and Undertones guitars and melody on 'East Sheen') and attitude (with ironic comments about fake punks on 'Pseudo Punk'), but as if seen from a distance, outside a decadent scene which had already been absorbed by the establishment. The single also features a sort of homonymous anthem called `O' Levels'.Ed Ball's music career would go on over the following decades as he continued developing his own strand of wonderful pop music through the 80s and 90s with bands such as Teenage Filmstars, Television Personalities, The Times and many more, plus several records as a solo artist.

"Hung Far Low" is the fifth and final studio album by New York noise rock band The Honeymoon Killers, originally released in 1991 and is now remastered in order to achieve the extreme sound desired for this band. The Honeymoon Killers recorded this album picking up 2/3 of the nascent Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and it meant a Sonic evolution to the band in the way to get the original Honeymoon Killers sound adding slicks of Pussy Galore and The Blues Explosion. Mixing Martines is the new project of the musician José Martínez Bonham. Acid Mess release their third full-length, Sangre de Otros Mundos, on Nov. 6 through Spinda Records. As one expect, the Asturias, Spain-based four-piece’s moniker does them something of a disservice on the seven-song offering, which though well enough acidic, is more cohesive than “mess” implies. Doubtless the band happened before the name, however, since indeed they do embody enough of a range of styles across the album’s 48 minutes that it becomes conceivable they’ve spent the half-decade since 2015’s II sorting it all into the proper order to make the tracks as flowing as they are, from the organ/synth/vocal buildup and guitar strum of opener “El Reflejo du Su Piel” through the folk-percussion-inclusive — clackers? flamenco handclaps? — heavy prog that ensues thereafter, leading to shout-topped sweeping groove, a left-hook of a guitar solo, a break for some guest vocals and more claps-or-not-claps and, at last, an explosion back to the hook.

We present the new album by the Barcelona band Los 4Señores, “De Tuset a Las Ramblas”, recorded at the “Sol de Sants” studios between June 19 and 24 and produced by Mike Mariconda. This is the second album by Los 4Señores, a band with seasoned members forged in the Barcelona scene of the 80s (Kamenbert, Killwatts, Wom! A2, Brighton 64) and on this occasion we are witnessing the sound of a group in clear evolution and progression of sound r&b and garage from his first LP towards new registers, always within his characteristic sound, based on powerful guitars and a powerful and forceful rhythm section. “De Tuset a Las Ramblas” contains 10 original songs and a version of “Bebiendo y Bailando” by the legendary band Mermelada. The sound palette of these compositions includes influences from 70's rock, pub rock, psychedelic overtones, country or rockabilly flashes, without Los 4Señores trying to exercise style. These influences dot the songs naturally, because that's how they emerged during the creative process of their composition. Without having premeditated it “From Tuset to Las Ramblas” is a conceptual album. Torre Hornero Sessions is the first EP of the group from Zaragoza PETRELLI originally formed by Eduardo Tomás -Zomas– (drums) and Miguel Ángel Gutiérrez -Prise- (guitar) as sound base and musical projects. His weekly rehearsal venue in Movera, Zaragoza, gives this work its title, a place through which different musicians have passed and participated in enjoying sessions and exploring new sounds. Finally, this long-awaited album comes to light along with two other names from the Aragonese scene: Guillermo Mata (bass and production) and Eric Castiglia (vocals). Torre Hornero Sessions finished recording at the beginning of the year and was mixed in the midst of a pandemic, using videoconferencing and new technologies. It is made up of four songs heir to American rock and even punk rock. These vintage references add up to a fresh sound, with its own style, brand and class. In the musical background of PETRELLI, the composition of three instrumental songs stands out to accompany the audiovisuals of the exhibition on the Battle of Dunbar, pieces from the most important archaeological find that took place in 2016 in the North of England. The show was organized by the Durham University Department of Archaeology, and won the 2019 Living North Award.
