  5. THE CRAMPS Smell Of Female (LP)

THE CRAMPS Smell Of Female (LP)

One gets the feeling from the title and cover art alone that if the Cramps could have released this live document in Glorious Smell-o-rama they would have jumped at the chance. Even without it one can almost sense the whiffs of perspiration and energy the group was cooking up; recorded at New York's Peppermint Lounge withPowers on guitar, the quartet slams out a then mostly entirely new set of songs with, as expected, appropriate covers as needed. The wonderfully profane take on Hasil Adkins' "She Said" surfaces here, with Interiorsounding like he's about to die more than once. The Count Five's "Psychotic Reaction" and the perfectly appropriate "Faster Pussycat," taken from the legendary Russ Meyer film of the same name, also give the band more than a little something to chew on. As for the originals, the usual mess of swampy rockabilly and industrial strength noise comes together in just the right way from the start. "Thee Most Exalted Potentate of Love" gives Interior the chance to do his undead but still wired loveman thang right from the start, while Ivyand Powers hit the twang hard and Knox keeps everything going just right. "Call of the Wighat" is another highpoint, with Knox showing that he's up to more involved pounding and percussion when the need arises. A studio cut, "Surfin' Dead," surfaces as a ringer at the end; if not quite the Cramps go Beach Boys, it arguably forecasts the Jesus and Mary Chain's "Kill Surf City" just enough.

    THE KANALOAS Letterjacket (7")

It’s here at last the long awaited new EP by The Kanaloas! One of the most important bands of surf-instro Spanish landscape features four tracks that make you the most popular of the institute. Rock and Roll, Surf, Frat and Hot-Rod, with some exotic influences, are the magic formula that makes the sound of The Kanaloas a brilliant instrumental rarity in the scene. Phil Dirt (Reverb Central) The Kanaloas defined as "natural descendants of instrumental surf classics with gender and evolved well understood." Currently the surf instrumental good health. Hundreds of groups, hundreds of albums and thousands of songs. But as always, it’s all over, and when this wave pass, only a few have been marked on our retina sound. And among them will, no doubt, The Kanaloas. The reason is clear: good songs. And that is what are the issues that make up this EP, recorded and produced in the studios Circo Perrotti. "Letterjacket", the title of the album, is a great frat-rock’n’roll composition in the style of the Wrecking Crew, definitely a "must" in the holidays most cherished. "Morocco Surf" is the most classic and surfer theme of EP, with brilliant composition, arrangement and production. Already on side B we find "Surf Like an Egyptian", excellent version of the Bangles classic, an entire floor-filler! and "Glassy" with a magical sound, you will enjoy the ocean and the beaches of California. You know, if you do not want to be a nerd, grab your Letterjacket, be true to your school, and The Kanaloas!!

Several changes in line up have led to Belgium’s Speedball Jr taking something of a sea change from their previous album For The Broad Minded. Out go the buzz saw guitar that epitomised their earlier incarnation, and in comes a more rhythmic and almost hypnotic riffing sound, which is largely nonetheless hectic in its performance.
Tracing their musical roots to the type of instrumental group that went largely out of fashion in the late 1960s, they have become something of a punked up version of The Surfaris.

  17. ALUMINUM KNOT EYE Trunk Lurker (LP)

ALUMINUM KNOT EYE Trunk Lurker (LP)

After a low-key decade-long run, Wisconsin's AluminumKnotEye finally unleash an album proper. These guys were making strange noise before strange noise was the current rave, before the nouveau indie bohemes copped the "art" schtick, before the last crop of garage punks dropped their Rip Off's covers and headed for discordant, angular horseshit that's as empty and worthless as it is fake. AKE are the real deal, and I love 'em for it. Think pieces of Chrome, the Residents, Big Black and Debris grafted onto the primitive r'n'r template birthed by the Pagans, the Electric Eels, early A. Cooper, etc., yet addled by the big-balls overdrive of early AmRep savagery and mangled by savage production. Keith's vox writhe and growl over the din as it explodes in short bursts and threatens to collapse, the barely-noticeable keys scraping weirdo patterns in the underbelly of it all the while. "Scales in the Tub" is tune of the year. Buy, or forever wallow in other boring stuff by other sub-par bands.

  24. WILD BILLY CHILDISH AND THE M.O.T.B.E. Rosie Jones (7")

WILD BILLY CHILDISH AND THE M.O.T.B.E. Rosie Jones (7")

Billy Childish should nowadays be well known for everybody. This man truly got a lot of various musical things going, and that with the most different artists and bands. The arguably most important stages in his musical biography from 1977 till this day: THE POP RIVETS, THE MILKSHAKES, THE MIGHTY CEASERS, THEE HEADCOATS, THE BUFF MEDWAYS and now BILLY CHILDISH & THE MUSICANS OF BRITISH EMPIRE!!! That this English Gentleman, who amongst others acted as music producer for GOLDENE ZITRONEN, HOLLY GOLIGHTLY, is very busy goes without saying. He has written both poems and prose, which were translated in several languages (HANGMAN BOOKS) and he has created, as independent artist, woodcuts and paintings stringently in the tradition of the Classic Modern. He released with all these bands and other side-projects more than 100 sound carriers by the most renowned Garage/Punk labels like SUB POP, K-REC., DAMAGED GOODS, CRYPT, SFTRI and by smaller labels worldwide. All these releases are account for the probably most independent and acerb style with 100% individual design, although the sound is different from project to project. Artists like WHITE STRIPES, KURT COBAIN (RIP), GRAHAM COXON etc. are referring to him as a source of inspiration. For his current combo, BILLY CHILDISH & THE MUSICANS OF BRITISH EMPIRES, BILLY CHILDISH (guitar and voice) could enlist MR. WOLF HOWARD (THE BUFF MEDEWAYS, THE PRIME MOVERS, THE SOLARFLARES, DAGGERMEN, JAMES TAYLOR QUARTET) for the instrumentation on drums and NURSE JULIE (THE ALINES.) for bass and moreover, her enchanting, harmonic but also sappy female voice. The two tracks on this SOUNDFLAT RECORDS 45, ROSIE JONES and LITTLE MISS CONTRARY are about 2 absolute 60's GaragePunk winner with a cracking lacing of R'N'B! Furthermore the two tune wedgies convince through the first-class arrangement and the harmonic singing in two voices. The mid 60's orientated and excellent songwriting satisfies once again, as a matter of course with this line-up. In addition SOUNDFLAT RECORDS reflects with this release the tend of the band to wear uniforms, for which reason we come up with a very special idea for this 45, something which has persuaded instantly the grandmaster BILLY CHILDISH and his squad too! BILLY CHILDISH & THE MUSICANS OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE are here exclusively available as DRESSDOLLS (which can be cut out and dressed like the - at most for children - popular DRESSDOLLS in the late 50's to mid 70's). With the included modish sheets of paper (which can be cut out too) we have leant against the authentic fashion in a way how it appeals to BILLY CHILDISH and his squad as well. On the one hand you have the possibility to dress BILLY CHILDISH & THE MUSICANS OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE up with their original stage uniforms, change their clothes for a trip to a sunny beach or to wrap them in a smart 60's look. CRISTIAN NOERTEM (APESVILLE ARTWORKS) was responsible for the authentic graphical realization. He designed the FOLDING COVER, the DRESSDOLLS as well as the bathing wear in a virtuoso way and in high quality. So help yourself before the run on these terrific limited (1000 pieces) single of the last band of the very busy grandmaster BILLY CHILDISH and his MUSICANS OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE begins!

  29. THE BIRDHOUSE Burnin' Up (LP)

    THE BIRDHOUSE Burnin' Up (LP)

Didn’t know much about The Birdhouse in 1988, and I don’t know much about ‘em now, either. All I really knew is that they dressed cool, and they shamelessly ripped off the Stooges, and that was plenty reason to celebrate back then. They were supposed to be a motley crew of freaks and social agitators who all met during a riot in Brixton, UK, in the mid ’80’s, but that’s all I really remember. Oh, and their bass player, Billy Scarr, was in the Dogs D’Amour for five minutes in 1985. Otherwise, it was a brief, blinding ascent to the dustbin for these guys. “Burnin’ Up” was released with a flurry of hype (“More Raw Power than a dozen Harleys put together!”), but failed to ignite it’s target audience (me and my friends, I would imagine) because it was, after all, the year of Guns N’ fucking Roses, which did not leave much room for anyone else, except Green River, and maybe a Halo of Flies single. Undaunted, they followed this one up a few months later with a muddy but unbowed live 10” on boner-inducing German vinyl label Glitterhouse, titled, imaginatively, “Raw and Alive”, and then spat out a second album, “Meglamania”, in 1989. It was produced by Vic Maile, the same sonic ‘wizard’ who ham-fistedly dated Motorhead and Girlschool forever with that awful 80’s cardboard thumping, and who made the otherwise lethal Godfathers sound like they were gasping for air from inside an empty fishtank. I didn’t actually have “Meglamania”, but I hear it’s even dumber than the first record, and includes an early, and surely regrettable, rap/metal stab. At any rate, it tanked. If you don’t believe me, go to the record store, it’s still sitting there. $1.99 or best offer. Still sealed. There was no way the grebo-baiting filthhounds in the Birdhouse were gonna carve out a niche for themselves in the mope-y, sweater wearing, casual-heroin-using world of the grunge/alt nation, so they all hopped on their superbikes and revved off into the sunset in 1990. I don’t know what happened to any of ‘em – singer Johnny Rev, hot blonde guitarist Kathy Freeman, Billy Scarr, second guitarist Mark Nicol, drummer Max Camtara. There’s a chance some of ‘em went on to bigger and better things, or weirder and sleazier things, but I’ve never seen a CD with an “Ex-Birdhouse!” sticker on it, and the last time I even mentioned them to anyone, I still had a full head of hair. So did Axl. It’s been awhile. Looking back, “Burnin’ Up” was Birdhouse’s finest moment, the crystallization of their Motor City Motherfucker aesthetic, a shaggy, shambolic mess of Iggy screams and Kramer distortion. They shared the hard-glam edge of Gunfire Dance, the psyche-fuzz freakery of Gaye Bykers on Acid, the relentless macho metal pounding of Rogue Male, the razorpunk thrash of the Necros, and Zodiac Mindwarp’s cosmic biker threads, but somehow, they managed to slip right through the cracks of sleaze metal history. This is probably because they relied more on tone and attitude than on actual songs, and just ask Princess Pang – you can have a great, raunchy, knife-fighting SOUND, but unless you’re a flabby stoner rock band with a less-than-alert fanbase, you gotta have the goddamn tunes if you wanna rope in the kids. Birdhouse thought they could carve out a whole career on that bit at the end of the show when you kick in the drumset and there’s distortion and smoke and screaming and blood and tits everywhere, but they never quite figured out how to START the party. A pity, really. They did have GREAT taste in leather jackets and sunglasses.

  36. THE FUZZTONES Raw Heat (LP)

    THE FUZZTONES Raw Heat (LP)

The original version of the album "In Heat' as it was intended to sound." The Fuzztones have been around for over 30 years as a garage rock revival band. Though originally from New York City they work mainly in Europe where their brand of retro 60 trash rock burns up radios from Hungary to Poland to Italy. The original In Heat was released in 1989 at the peak of the Garage Revival when bands like the Chesterfield Kings, Lyres, and Cynics were all the rage. Unsurprising, the music industry turned a blind eye, yet miraculously The Fuzztones signed a major label deal with RCA. Label politics had the band in a eal' studio with a "name' producer who watered down their unharnessed energy and snotty attitude. In the end the original disc was a second rate affaire with most of the grit rubbed out only to die a sad, quick death at the hands of critics who never appreciated the band's live act anyway. With the resurgence in garage rock in the Hives and Strokes, the time may be right again for The Fuzztones to get a second shot. Raw Heat therefore turns the clock back in time when garage rock rivaled punk as the most exciting musical scene to come along in decades. Produced by founder/guitarist/singer Rudi Protrudi and Jordan Tarlow (Outta Place, Morlocks) the recording gets a second wind when "Heathen Set" comes roaring out of the speakers. The running order has changed from the original recording putting more power up front. Both the classic church organ and dangerous guitars are better controlled in the mix (originally the organ overpowered the whole thing). "Hurt on Hold" still stands strong as the band's real chance at a single although "Me Tarzan, You Jane" with its featured harmonica is a close second. The added punch of the bass and primitive drums give the whole thing a real boost especially on "Cheyenne Rider" and "You Must Be A Witch" - no wonder Ian Asbury of The Cult was so hooked on these guys. Best song in our book is the title track "in Heat" - "We'll I'm a big bad wolf, can't ya hear me howl." Ahh.give the boys the credit they deserve...and all the fame!

  37. CURLEE WURLEE! My Brain Is Empty

CURLEE WURLEE! My Brain Is Empty

    ARTIST: CURLEE WURLEE!
    TITLE: MY BRAIN IS EMPTY
    FORMAT: 7"
    LABEL: LARSEN RECORDS
    CATALOGUE NUMBER: LZ 096

Their smashing hit “My brain is empty” came out this year on the sensational longplayer “Curlee Wurlee Likes Milk”. And this 7” presents the obligatory piano version of it (instead of organ), and is anchored in the good ol’ Kinks story-telling tradition: it could have been composed by Ray Davies in 1966, but it hasn't... instead, it was written by Cécile Musy (better known as Organella), and is a disillusioned hymn full of booze and macabre irony indeed.

  38. THE BRIMSTONES Serve Cold (7")

    THE BRIMSTONES Serve Cold (7")

Cobbled together from instruments fished out of the garbage and influenced by records nobody would ever fess up to diggin’ in good conscience, the Brimstones came together in 98’ to fill a grave left empty w/ the absence of real, intense, balls out rock & roll (not to be confused w/ the pap that passes for the real deal these days).

Clubs were closing, the scene was deader than a 6pcs bucket of extra crispy, CB’s had installed an art gallery (!?!?). There seemed little hope than subsequent generations of NJ suburbanites and NY scumbags would ever see the sight of splintered guitars, fuck a piece of strange in a bathroom stall, nor slip around in a puddle of blood that wasn’t there own.
Yet through some strange hitherto unknown Alchemy of Vacuum Tubes, Transistors, pointy shoes and, more often than not, Thunderbird Wine, the ‘Stones’, as they came to be called (Not to be confused w/ those other guys) , managed to pack houses, basements, bars and the occasional Taco joint with the most eclectic group of low lives (A term of endearment); whipping themselves into a violent frenzy akin to a spiritual trance and inviting everyone to take part in their saturnalia-like orgy of destruction and self-gratification.

With absolutely no support form the underground music establishment (too busy hiring stylists to give a hang about the music itself) nor a kind word from area journalists preoccupied with tacking their byline on self-aggrandizing bullshit, the Brimstones still managed to hammer their message squarely between the eyes of any who cared to listen, and indeed managed to hang on and even increase their grip where as others passed into obscurity and, more often than not, day jobs.

Yet instead of just riding the coat tales of local acts of manufactured rebellion and pretentious art house shtick, the Brimstones made it a point to give the kind of show that not only made the audience fear for their safety, but *gasp* actually dance (In full view of their friends, no less). Bones were broken, mic stands took flight, hips were dislocated; in short, the stars aligned, and for a time, teenagers walked the walk instead of just getting a cool haircut, an ironic tee-shirt and missing the point completely.

But what is the point? In a word, Rock and Roll is not a genre. It is not a fad or a faze. It is not a style that can be co-opted, nor does it suffer the weak. Rock and roll is a religion, born out of primitive desire and hedonistic indulgence. It has no message, no lofty aspirations. What it does do is get you broken teeth, free drinks and occasionally laid with impunity, and that, my friends, is where the Brimstones come in…

The Brimstone have held their own onstage alongside some of the greatest acts Rock & Roll has to offer including the Cramps, Damned, Slits, Ventures, Seeds, ? & the Mysterions, Link Wray, Dick Dale and the Remains just to rattle of a handful. Often imitated, never duplicated (occasionally questioned by local authorities) the Brimstones are an American band, a Jersey band, and barring a change in the statute of limitations, a Rock & Roll band, free to play whatever the fuck they want, whenever they want and to whoever is willing to listen. Consider this your heads up. Wear a helmet.

Prepare yourself for the all new release from Go Ape Records: three rug-cutters from New Jersey's favorite hellions, the Brimstones! In the grand tradition of records that don't suck, the Brimstones new 45 lifts and separates like a bullet bra for your soul. This is a very limited release, so get it while it's white hot. It's more fun than a barrel of drunken monkeys and only costs your sanity.

Cobwebbs is the third wave of psychedelia reaching the shore of my discotheque. A great revival sound. Is it from the hippie sixties or from the noisy eighties? Who cares? Enjoy it.
