The great Texas bluesman Lightnin' Hopkins (1912-1982) recorded these fabulous tracks for Aladdin in Los Angeles and Houston between 1946 & 1948. These early performances are considered as seminal works not only for Hopkins's career but also for the whole history of country Blues. Here Lightnin' is mostly alone with his guitar, except on some tracks where he is joined by pianist Wilson "Thunder" Smith or some unknown drummer. Hopkins's intense guitar and deep voice and lyrics are at the very center of this unprecedented music. In one word. A masterpiece!!!

Some players from Ray Charles' big band are joined by many ringers from the Count Basie and Duke Ellington bands for the first half of this program, featuring Charles belting out six songs arranged by Quincy Jones. "Let the Good Times Roll" and "Deed I Do" are highlights, and there are solos by tenorman David "Fathead" Newman, trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, and (on "Two Years of Torture") tenor Paul Gonsalves. The remaining six numbers are ballads, with Charles backed by a string orchestra arranged by Ralph Burns (including "Come Rain or Come Shine" and "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Cryin'"). Charles' voice is heard throughout in peak form, giving soul to even the veteran standards.

Cut from the same 1960 sessions as Slim's equally fine Just Blues album, No Strain finds the pianist and singer effortlessly working through another set of solo piano and combo pieces. Backed by either harmonica player "Harpie" Brown or the tandem of guitarist Lafayette Thomas and bassist Wendell Marshall, Slim turns in a highly enjoyable set of seasoned performances. Both at the keyboard and the mic, alone or with company, Slim shows why he was one of the most urbane and original of blues giants.

This was the second Sam & Dave album to enjoy significant crossover appeal. The 1967 record included such hits as "Said I Wasn't Gonna Tell Nobody," "Soothe Me," and "When Something Is Wrong with My Baby." Isaac Hayes and David Porter were now rolling as songwriters, and even though the record didn't attain big pop numbers, the singles clicked with both soul and pop audiences. More importantly, Sam & Dave's teamwork and vocal interaction were establishing them as major stars.

Now, 20 years after its publication, we present a careful double vinyl edition, a format in which it was not originally published. This album was recorded with the band that helped him present his acclaimed Brigadistak Sound System live and went on a 2-year tour with it. The album has 3 extra remixes: Javi P3Z and Xabi Pery remix Big Beñat and Rude does the same with Dub Manifest. Everybody dance!

First European release on 45 "vinyl on Vampi-Soul Records featuring Deniz Tek's guitar Inspired by artists such as Etta James and Julie London, Lizzie already wowed fans with her mesmerizing stage presence and seductive singing voice with sensual jazz through the Sydney gambling dens when in late 2007 he teamed up with Deniz Tek to continue pursuing his lifelong love of soul music. Deniz's rocker past with Radio Birdman is well known. In recent years he has also worked with Scott Morgan, powerful soul voice of legendary Detroit Rationals. Together they have performed pieces like Otis Redding's "Respect" and Johnnie Taylor's "Hijackin 'Love" before crazed audiences across the US. Lizzie and Deniz worked hard together on a few songs , with a cover of Aretha Franklin's 'Baby I Love You' and the original piece 'Piece O Me' completing the final selection of her first vinyl release. The recording sessions also included alloy the walls of the Hothouse studio in Melbourne in mid-2008. The Memphis-style rhythm section included Craig Harnath on bass and veteran producer, performer and drummer Brett Wolfenden, whose mastery and playing attitude did more than justice to his team's sound. vintage Ludwig from the 60's. Deniz and Lizzie are currently putting the finishing touches on their first album: 'Play Me' which will hit the airwaves in mid-2009 and plans are already being finalized for tours of Europe and the US.

In Angola, in one way or another, Vum Vum is normally considered to be the father figure of the Angolan rock scene.There has been a fair amount of tributes paid to the overwhelming uniqueness of 'Muzangola', his first EP, published in 1969 by Valentim de Carvalho. However, despite its release in Portugal, the record never saw wide distribution in its main'metropolis'. Most copies traveled with the Portuguese diaspora, and the record became a cult holy grail highly sought by record collectors in Europe. It's raw. It's emotional. It's heavy. It's short. This EP, of just four tracks, is full of emotion. Just listen to the crying shattering scream on Monami, and you will understand what we mean. This Groovie Records reissue is not only much welcomed, but, in this sense, brings due recognition for this masterpiece by the Angola Screamin' Jay Hawkins!

Heralding two new albums recently recorded by UK Rhythm & Blues songstress Aisha Khan with her mighty band The Rajahs, Folc Records have released the first single from these sessions.
This double A sided 45 features one song from her soon to be released album of duets and one from the upcoming solo album. Original song Good Morning Midnight looks to be a definitive new Blues classic, smacking you right between the eyes like a knockout blow from ‘Iron Mike’ with Mal Barclay laying down a crunchy guitar riff that’s so iconic you just know all the boys’ll be practicing it in their bedrooms. Powered along by an insistent rhythm from Matt Radford and Brian Nevill with Al Nicholls on sax, the song is also remarkable for its guest vocalist Blues legend Big Joe Louis. This is the first duet he has ever recorded and his first studio recording for about 15 years.
The flip side sees a reworking of the Memphis Jug Band’s 1930 recording of Cocaine Habit Blues. Al Nicholls kicked it forward a couple of decades with a driving Upsetter’s style groove and La Khan added a cheeky nod to the Dillinger cult classic Cocaine in my Brain.
