CLAW HAMMER Pablum (LP)
On Pablum, Claw Hammer once again put hard rock and blues through the punk wringer. In comparison with 1992's Ramwhale, the songs are perhaps more concise and the album more cohesive as a whole, but that's not to say that things have been toned down for this release. On the contrary, although Pablum displays a more focused approach, it's infused with a greater measure of explosive energy than its predecessor. From the outset, as the band crashes unceremoniously into the frantic, staccato charge of "Vigil Smile," Pablum has a feel of managed mayhem. This is a band seemingly operating on the brink of sonic anarchy at all times. Indeed, that precarious balance between chaos and relative order is one of the most compelling features of Claw Hammer's sound. Throughout Pablum, the group achieves that balance with a combination of signature elements: Jon Wahl's verge-of-a-nervous-breakdown vocals, a guitar assault that often puts songs into overdrive and threatens to push them over the edge, and a talent for seamlessly integrated stop-start rhythms and bursts of sudden acceleration. Although abrupt shifts in intensity and pace are a crucial characteristic of Claw Hammer's often frenzied sound, there's also a more intricate dimension as the band incorporates changes in time signature. "Pablum on My Mind," for instance, occasionally breaks into a near sea shanty lilt that gives the number a playful, off-kilter flavor. On the album's standout track, "William Tell," Claw Hammer's more frazzled, manic tendencies are amplified by Wahl's punctuating blasts of harmonica. Those harp squalls lend a blistering, crazed feel that's entirely appropriate to the song's apparent subject matter -- William Burroughs' bizarre murder of his wife. All told, the title of Claw Hammer's fourth album is supremely ironic: Pablum is about as far from bland, insipid entertainment as you could get.

DIMI DERO INC. Cremation Day In The Court Of Miracles (LP)
"The third album from French quartet Dimi Dero Inc is an ugly, cantankerous creature. If music has charms to sooth the savage beat, this is the sound of someone taking a washed-out, dull-eyed bull by the horns and planting a big knife squarely between its sagging shoulder blades. There are no half measures on "Cremation Day". It's a dirty, grinding bag of songs and an engrossing trip down the funeral chapel conveyor belt and into the rock furnace. Few introductions should be needed. DDI is on its third Australian tour in October 2010 and two of them like it here so much that they're doing more dates, backing Penny Ikinger. That's an admirable work ethic by any stretch. Dimi Dero Inc also collectively knocks around with the likes of The Drones, the New Christs, Beasts of Bourbon and Tex Perkins. With friends like those, etc. etc. but there's a common characteristic shared by all - intensity - and this is a key point on "Cremation". Dimi Dero (the person) is the smouldering frontman, the singer and guitarist with a burning desire to be an Australian. Well, dream on, mate! No, I'm joking. Dimi is one talented multi-instrumental motherfucker and a nice guy to boot whose cunning master plan to make his band more known around the world than Nicolas Sarkozy might just come off. Most of the time when you listen to this album, you'll be hanging off his words. DDI's bass player is Vinz Guilluy; he wears his left-handed instrument slung around his ankles to summon up fluid, thunderous bass-lines. He doubles up in the great Holy Curse and he and Sophie throw a great party. Guitarist Jean-Luc Barranco's thick, distorted chord work provides tuned-down riffage that's a focal point for most of the songs, and delivers a fine vocal on "Little Big Baby". Drummer Pascal Manganaro (an ex-Holy Curser) drags and pushes the rhythms around like he's toting a body bag to the morgue, but there's also a deft skill in his work and his neatly-placed, Billy Ficca-styled accents colour the songs. Some people are going to make a big deal about Rob Younger being the producer - and they should because he has brought a sharper focus to DDI. The mix is full yet translucent with globs of fuzz ("Unfair Enough".) Sure, these guys have cocked an ear to Rowland S. Howard and the arty end of Oz Rock (the Birthday Party crew), but there's a distinct New Christs rock feel to "Bored" and "Recipe For Happiness." You can pick up on the St Kilda affectations, but I maintain that the "Sour Milk" Beasts and second phase Scientists are the real progenitors. There's still ample angst among the guitars and although the prevailing dress code is black, DDI let their sense of humour show right through on songs like "The Dentist" and "My Pals". So don't be too busy slashing your wrists to miss it. Things aren't that grim. DDI even shows a hard pop side on "Sinner Saint" and "Euterpe". I've grown to like each DDI release more than the one before. I'm fairly sure you will too."

KIM AND LEANNE True West (LP)
Kim Salmon’s creative productivity knows no bounds. While he occasionally looks backwards, re-visiting his Scientists and Beasts of Bourbon history in the live sense, for example, the overwhelming sense with Salmon is one of overwhelming momentum.
That’s the case with “True West”, his latest project which pairs him with late period Scientists drummer Leanne Cowie (nee Chock) to be his most vital sounding record since “Sin Factory”.
People will say there’s a lot of the Scientists in this album and the antecedents of both members of the duo makes it hard for that not to be the case. It’s also true that Salmon became the dominant force in that band so any mirrored traits are as much his as his old band’s.
That’s not to understate the contributions of his bandmates, but Salmon’s harrowing vocals and circular, insistent fuzz guitar lines were the glue for those throbbing one-note bass-lines and primal drum feels. Kim and Leanne is very much be a partnership on-stage but the songs are Salmon’s, with co-producer and Precious Jewels bandmate Michael Stranges a co-writer.
Make no mistake: From the creeping damp of industrial-smeared opener “The Science Test” to the piercing wail of “Freudian Slippers” and the death march of “Rude Embryos”, these are great songs. They’re not as brazenly abrasive as the last Surrealists album “Grand Unifying Theory” but they’re ugly enough in their own way. There’s no mid-album sweetener like “Rose Coloured Windscreen” on “Sin Factory” - a seeping cover of the Stones’ “Dead Flowers” serves that purpose - but there’s ample energy among the at times crushingly acrid sounds.
Do you listen to the words in songs? The lyrics are suitably twisted and off-the-wall.
While the chunky fuzz of “Hard To Get” embeds itself in your head, “So Naive” borders on perverse pop. it’s nicely brought undone by the atonal closer “Double Negativ”, where discordant guitar and vocals entwine themselves around Leanne Cowie’s rhythms.
You rarely hear people raving about Leanne’s drumming but Kim feels so highly about it that he installed her in a re-activated Scientists line-up a few years ago. Her drumming is the prefect foil on “True West” and it's easy to forget you’re listening to a duo.
“True West” is a high point. Don’t let it pass you by.(i94bar.com)

Under the influence of writers, poets and revolutionaries, Stu T offers a rich musical journey through a darkly compelling world that’s bursting at the seams with an unholy grace.
A world of menacing glances, seedy bars, red wine and heavy breathing over a dodgy phone line. Deep-well baritone vocals and warm, nocturnal undercurrents recall Serge Gainsbourg and Johnny Cash, alongside twisted Lee and Nancy duets for a new generation.
Recorded in Stu’s Melbourne home, Audrey Studios (Melbourne) and Mez Studios (Berlin), all songs were penned by Stu T except for the chilling re-working of “Folsom Prison Blues”. Guest appearances include: Clare Moore (Moodists), Anna Burley (Killjoys) and Mike Noga (The Drones).
