Quick Overview

It could be said that Serge Gainsbourg was a typically French artist, although his music was so personal that it would be difficult to find a similar artist in France in his time. The same could be said of Double Vainica. They were a distinctively Spanish duo, but it is impossible to draw any parallels between them and any other music produced in Spain during the years they were active. Gloria Van Aerssen and Carmen Santonja were truly unique and their mix of folk, traditional genres and psychedelic rock is a landmark of Spanish pop.

This self-titled LP is their unbeatable first album, which despite its very low initial sales (it is said that most of the copies were destroyed by one of the Opalo label partners after sending them to Argentina) has been a tremendously influential album for generations of pop musicians in Spain and a holy grail for many music fans. There are plenty of reasons for this.

The song that opens it, ‘Lemon caramel’, already shows the effectiveness of its musical recipe. Fantastic vocal harmonies, unusual arrangements, original elements incorporated into the songs, and even fierce guitars when needed (his backing group, Los Tickets, would later become Asfalto, one of the leading Spanish hard rock groups). As the album progresses, each song is a jewel of wonderful idiosyncrasy: ‘Dime, Félix’, ‘Roberto Querido’, ‘Fulgencio Pimentel’ ... There are even drum breaks in ‘Who puts the bell on the cat’!

The album is completed with the incredible psychedelic art of Iván Zulueta, a cult artist whose work spanned different fields, including graphic design, film and photography.
