THE BLACK CROWES Warpaint Live (3LP)
WarPaint Live finds the Black Crowes running through their 2008 comeback Warpaint in its entirety during a gig in Los Angeles, adding a five-song coda of covers and Crowes classics. Warpaint was a reunion and revitalization for the Black Crowes, their best album in a long time, and much of that renewed energy can be heard in this performance, which manages to be loose and tight, the work of a band comfortable in its own skin and strength. Apart from the closing covers, highlighted by a coolly confident "Torn and Frayed" and a raucous "Hey Grandma," surprises are a bit hard to come by, but that's not a problem because the band never sounds tired; they're engaged, so it's hard not to be swept up in their enthusiasm too.

JOHNNY CASH At San Quentin (LP)
To put the performance on Johnny Cash at San Quentin in a bit of perspective: Johnny Cash's key partner in the Tennessee Two, guitarist Luther Perkins, died in August 1968, just seven months before this set was recorded in February 1969. In addition to that, Cash was nearing the peak of his popularity -- his 1968 live album, At Folsom Prison, was a smash success -- but he was nearly at his wildest in his personal life, which surely spilled over into his performance. All of this sets the stage for Johnny Cash at San Quentin, a nominal sequel to At Folsom Prison that surpasses its predecessor and captures Cash at his rawest and wildest. Part of this is due to how he feeds off of his captive audience, playing to the prisoners and seeming like one of them, but it's also due to the shifting dynamic within the band. Without Perkins, Cash isn't tied to the percolating two-step that defined his music to that point. Sure, it's still there, but it has a different feel coming from a different guitarist, and Cash sounds unhinged as he careens through his jailhouse ballads, old hits, and rockabilly-styled ravers, and even covers the Lovin' Spoonful ("Darlin' Companion"). No other Johnny Cash record sounds as wild as this. He sounds like an outlaw and renegade here, which is what gives it power -- listen to "A Boy Named Sue," a Shel Silverstein composition that could have been too cute by half, but is rescued by the wild-eyed, committed performance by Cash, where it sounds like he really was set on murdering that son of a bitch who named him Sue. He sounds that way throughout the record, and while most of the best moments did make it to the original 1969 album, the 2000 Columbia/Legacy release eclipses it by presenting nine previously unreleased bonus tracks, doubling the album's length, and presenting such insanely wild numbers as "Big River" as well as sweeter selections like "Daddy Sang Bass." Now, that's the only way to get the record, and that's how it should be, because this extra material makes a legendary album all the greater -- in fact, it helps make a case that this is the best Johnny Cash album ever cut.

THE DANKOES Some Kind Of Grit (LP)
Some Kind Of Grit, is an expression that ironizes about those whose lives twist over and over again, until they fall down a spiral that seems to never end, without being very clear about where it takes you. That's why Javier chose it as the title of the album, because of everything he suffered after his debut album. At least he brought out a handful of songs, the ones that make up the A-side of the album and it is perfectly reflected in the evocative —albeit cryptic— cover designed by Galli Martini, which shines especially and logically on the vinyl's gatefold folder. The arid interior photography supposes that metaphorical crossing of the desert that sometimes you have to go through in order to be reborn from your ashes. And it is that, fortunately, after the storm, calm almost always arrives and the B-side is pure redemption, like the luminous «Stop Hurting Yourself», almost a declaration of principles adorned by guitars that can evoke Gram Parsons and his flying burritos.

LOS 4SEÑORES De Tuset A La Rambla (LP)
We present the new album by the Barcelona band Los 4Señores, “De Tuset a Las Ramblas”, recorded at the “Sol de Sants” studios between June 19 and 24 and produced by Mike Mariconda. This is the second album by Los 4Señores, a band with seasoned members forged in the Barcelona scene of the 80s (Kamenbert, Killwatts, Wom! A2, Brighton 64) and on this occasion we are witnessing the sound of a group in clear evolution and progression of sound r&b and garage from his first LP towards new registers, always within his characteristic sound, based on powerful guitars and a powerful and forceful rhythm section. “De Tuset a Las Ramblas” contains 10 original songs and a version of “Bebiendo y Bailando” by the legendary band Mermelada. The sound palette of these compositions includes influences from 70's rock, pub rock, psychedelic overtones, country or rockabilly flashes, without Los 4Señores trying to exercise style. These influences dot the songs naturally, because that's how they emerged during the creative process of their composition. Without having premeditated it “From Tuset to Las Ramblas” is a conceptual album. All the themes of his lyrics allude to the city, in this case Barcelona, although it could be any other, to specific places in its landscape, and to the people who live there. In this citizen framework, we see the daily problems and joys of ordinary people, who interact in their streets, bars, or subway stations.

PETRELLI Torre Hornero Sessions (7")
Torre Hornero Sessions is the first EP of the group from Zaragoza PETRELLI originally formed by Eduardo Tomás -Zomas– (drums) and Miguel Ángel Gutiérrez -Prise- (guitar) as sound base and musical projects. His weekly rehearsal venue in Movera, Zaragoza, gives this work its title, a place through which different musicians have passed and participated in enjoying sessions and exploring new sounds. Finally, this long-awaited album comes to light along with two other names from the Aragonese scene: Guillermo Mata (bass and production) and Eric Castiglia (vocals). Torre Hornero Sessions finished recording at the beginning of the year and was mixed in the midst of a pandemic, using videoconferencing and new technologies. It is made up of four songs heir to American rock and even punk rock. These vintage references add up to a fresh sound, with its own style, brand and class. In the musical background of PETRELLI, the composition of three instrumental songs stands out to accompany the audiovisuals of the exhibition on the Battle of Dunbar, pieces from the most important archaeological find that took place in 2016 in the North of England. The show was organized by the Durham University Department of Archaeology, and won the 2019 Living North Award.

PALE PREACHER Sadness Makes Me Less Unkind (LP)
Sadness Makes Me Less Unkind is the first album by Pale Preacher, artistic name of Francisco Galacho, singer and guitarist of the Malaga band The Blackberry Clouds. With this solo work, the author deepens as a composer and performer in the influences already evident in the second stage of The Blackberry Clouds, which began with Dry Wind (2012) -the first LP in which he assumed the role of lead singer and songwriter- and continued with Blood on her Boots… (2016) and Farewell Songs (2018), the latter two published by Clifford. On the one hand, it is music inspired by American roots, with a predilection for country and folk, and with artists like Townes Van Zandt or Johnny Cash from American Recordings as references; on the other, in the alternative rock of bands like The Sadies or Hugo Race & the True Spirit, which start from those "roots" to open new musical paths. Being the composer and practicing as a multi-instrumentalist, Francisco has been able to unleash his creativity, showing a greater desire for experimentation and interest in exploring different registers and styles. Sadness Makes Me Less Unkind is, therefore, a consciously eclectic album.

PALE PREACHER Hanged, Drawn, Quartered… (LP+7")
The previous LP, Sadness Makes Me Less Unkind, could be framed within the alt country and folk of bands like The Sadies or Mark Lanegan, while drawing on traditional influences from Johnny Cash to Townes Van Zandt. Although these influences continue to permeate the music of Pale Preacher, Hanged, Drawn, Quartered…, it is, in general, a denser and darker album, with angular electric guitar arrangements, closer at times to the early Bad Seeds or Kim Salmon and their respective reviews of roots music.

DARREN JOSEPH ANDERSON Songs For Mystic Lovers (LP)
Formidable solo debut of the British musician established in Granada, Darren Joseph Anderson (ex Sunset Riders). 'Songs For Mystic Lovers' (Lucinda Records, 2022) is a lysergic journey full of mysticism through 60's Pop and Psychedelia with the vocal magnetism of Syd Barret, Ray Davies and Iggy Pop. Together with Darren (voice and guitars) they participate on the recording Javier Cantudo (drums), Javi Rodríguez (bass) and Antonio Ávila (keyboards). In his return to the front line of fire, the Briton has put all his skills at the service of the song, without discriminating whether it takes the form of a dark blues or a folk ballad, of acoustic preciosity or a potential pop single, giving shape to a work complex and beautiful, so timeless that it smells like a league classic.

TEX PERKINS & THE FAT R. B. Other World (LP vinilo naranja)
Through the recent years of lockdowns and silence and having too much time to think, Tex Perkins always found solace in the company of song. Having his friend Matt Walker as a co-writer-conspirator, Perkins revelled in the experience which prompted the forming and recording of the first Fat Rubber Band album at Walker & #39’s Stovepipe Studios with bassist Steve Hadley, drummer Roger Bergodaz and percussionist Evan Richards. After such an affirmative and creative experience Perkins was itching to commence work on what has become the band’s second album, Other World. “The first Fat Rubber Band album was kind of deliberately a little ragged. A bit fuzzy around the edges” said Perkins. “There is a certain maturity that we now possess where ideas can be realised and take form very quickly. We’ve become a real band. I think what you heard on the first album is the band being formed.” While he’s played with many musicians, finding true collaborators is something that Perkins treasures. During the lockdowns, he pondered whether he would ever have that day-to-day musician experience again. With The Fat Rubber Band it’s not just another grouping of musicians playing music together, but a gathering that is very much about the head, heart and soul and something he is clearly grateful for. “Roger Bergodaz was incredible. His drum kit was in the control room and he engineered the record and played drums pretty much at the same time! He constantly created the surroundings where an enthusiastic and positive atmosphere always prevailed. We never came away empty handed. I loved making this record so much,” Perkins says, “because fucking magic happened. Yes, that’s right, magic or how about alchemy? (A medieval science with a mysterious process that seeks to turn base metals into Gold.) Well, I dunno about gold, but I witnessed ideas, thoughts, whims and imaginings transmute almost effortlessly into living breathing songs with a soul and a heartbeat and even their own private history every time we went into the studio for this recording. Actually, no, magic is better.” Perkins explains “This magic came about with the help of over 4O years of experience from each of the Fat Rubber band members. They’re all truly great players and they’re all really generous collaborators, so I guess what I’m saying is, it doesn’t matter what happens from here. I’m very aware these days, with 100s of new releases each week, it’s harder than ever to get people to give a shit about a new album from anybody, let alone from a bunch of hairy blokes in their 50s from Australia fronted by a dude that’s been around since the early eighties named Tex. Actually, I can’t believe you’re still reading this! But you know it doesn’t really matter, I’ve seen the magic.”
