In Angola, in one way or another, Vum Vum is normally considered to be the father figure of the Angolan rock scene.There has been a fair amount of tributes paid to the overwhelming uniqueness of 'Muzangola', his first EP, published in 1969 by Valentim de Carvalho. However, despite its release in Portugal, the record never saw wide distribution in its main'metropolis'. Most copies traveled with the Portuguese diaspora, and the record became a cult holy grail highly sought by record collectors in Europe. It's raw. It's emotional. It's heavy. It's short. This EP, of just four tracks, is full of emotion. Just listen to the crying shattering scream on Monami, and you will understand what we mean. This Groovie Records reissue is not only much welcomed, but, in this sense, brings due recognition for this masterpiece by the Angola Screamin' Jay Hawkins!

Nowhere in history have as many legendary performers appeared on one record, for the purpose of saluting another artist. In this case, the artist is the band that instigated the 80s Garage revival that continues to today - The Fuzztones. Preaching the Garage (and Psych) gospel since their inception in 1980, The Fuzztones influenced countless bands worldwide with their enigmatic image, high velocity performance and personalized interpretations. Fact is, even if The Fuzztones had never written a song in their long and illustrious career, they succeeded in accomplishing something much more important, even profound - the resurrected a music style that had only existed from (roughly) 1966 to 1967, and through relentless touring and recording, kept it alive for over 33 years. Initially, the bands mission was to introduce this long-lost music to the world, and did so by covering obscure classics, many by artists who appear on this album."When the Beatles and Stones started out, they covered a lot of Motown and blues stuff, in an attempt to turn people on to it," points out head Fuzztone, Rudi Potrudi, "and thats what we wanted to do as well." The music they chose to cover was so obscure that most of their audience assumed they were originals, and the band could easily have kept it that way. Instead, Rudi joined forces with Germanys Music Maniac label and released the album, 'Songs We Taught The Fuzztones', a collection of original versions of songs made famous by The Fuzztones. This record, released in 1993, turned Fuzztones fans on to the original artists, hence beginning the 'purist' movement that eventually spawned the emergence of reunited 60s Garage and Psych legends, as well as events such as Cavestomp, which brought them and their newfound fan base together. The Surprise Package was comprised of members from The Viceroys and The Galaxies. Rescued from old cassette tapes, that recording finally comes out five decades later, displaying the rebel spirit of a group influenced by Mersey beat, surf and garage."Me gritan melenudo" contains 'Alma agobiada', their only original composition, plus raw covers of The Beatles, The Monkees, The Troggs, Lovin' Spoonful, Miriam Makeba and The Ventures. It also includes two more Beatles songs and a couple of covers from the Wild In The Street soundtrack recorded in 1970 by Los Yoguis, as the group was known at the end of their short-lived career. Plus many photos, a family tree and the detailed story of the band.

The first hits compilation of the Rolling Stones is still one of the most potent collections of singles that one can find. Listening to it in 1966 or today, one can understand how, almost prematurely for the 1960s -- as most of the material here dates from 1964 or 1965 -- the Stones set themselves up as the decade's most visible rock & roll rebels. The defiant, in-your-face fuzztone riff and sexually frustrated lyrics of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" and the frenetic pounding punk anthem "Get Off of My Cloud" are highlights of a 12-song set that has no weak points, only peaks -- the louder-than-life rhythm guitars on "It's All Over Now" and "The Last Time," the wailing R&B of "Time Is on My Side," the balladry, folk, and soul style of "As Tears Go By" and "Tell Me," and all of the rest make for a body of work that's still amazing to hear decades after the fact. Appearing as it did in the late winter of 1966, this collection completely missed the group's drift into psychedelia, and it has since been supplanted by Hot Rocks and More Hot Rocks, but Big Hits is still the most concentrated dose of the early Stones at their most accessible that is to be had, short of simply playing their first five U.S. albums. The artwork and photography were pretty cool too, and the original LP had one of rock's early classic gatefold album designs.

The Rolling Stones' 1967 recordings are a matter of some controversy; many critics felt that they were compromising their raw, rootsy power with trendy emulations of the Beatles, Kinks, Dylan, and psychedelic music. Approach this album with an open mind, though, and you'll find it to be one of their strongest, most eclectic LPs, with many fine songs that remain unknown to all but Stones devotees. The lyrics are getting better (if more savage), and the arrangements more creative, on brooding near-classics like "All Sold Out," "My Obsession," and "Yesterday's Papers." "She Smiled Sweetly" shows their hidden romantic side at its best, while "Connection" is one of the record's few slabs of conventionally driving rock. The best tracks on the American edition were the two songs that gave the group a double-sided number one in early 1967: the lustful "Let's Spend the Night Together" and the beautiful, melancholy "Ruby Tuesday," which is as melodic as anything Mick Jagger and Keith Richards would ever write.
